This site isn't really about giving security advice, there are lots of clever people out there who will offer lots of advice (some of which may actually be useful). However since someone might stray onto this site here are a few random tips and advice - Don't share your passwords with anyone
- If you do online banking, make sure before you logon to the bank you close all other web pages first
- If you get a virus, don't panic, disconnect from the internet and then run a full virus scan, follow the instructions
- There are lots of spoof emails out there, if it says it's from your bank it probably isn't (ring them on the number on the bank website (not the email) they are nice people)
- If you have to forward a joke email, please send it as a BCC (it helps reduce spam)
- Always use anti-virus and a firewall, there are plenty, some are better than others, most are better than having nothing
- If you have irreplaceable family photos, save a copy or print them (losing your hard drive is a tad expensive) but if you do lose them, don't give up, there are companies who can help you get them back
- Windows has a nice feature called 'system restore' its sort of like an undo for the computer and reverts it back to a previous state, before you make any big changes set a restore point
- Don't have an open access wireless point (or even WEP) it can be broken into, while you may not think this is an issue, imagine that the local wierdo is downloading strange stuff via your web connection. Yes, you are innocent but you will have a really bad day in an interview room proving that.
